Underground Versus Above Ground Pools? It’s March, and in Oklahoma that could mean more winter, but most of the time it means here comes the rain and then here comes the heat. Tax returns are back and families are thinking, now is the time to get that family pool! But they are unsure of which one to get, so they wonder Underground Versus Above Ground Pools?
Inground vs. Aboveground Cost:
Inground pools (vinyl, concrete, or fiberglass) will cost $20-70k. Depending upon materials, size, land excavation, part of the country, and additions.
If you see an inground pool advertised for $15,000 run! This is not accurate of the true cost of an inground pool. Likely, these costs wouldn’t include:
- Patio/Decking around the pool
- Electrical Hookup
- Accessories (Like salt chlorine generators, heaters, covers, etc.)
When purchasing an above ground pool, there are 3 main cost areas:
- The price of the kit itself (normally 3-7k)
- The price of the installation (typically 1-5k)
- The price of the pool surround/decking (varies)
In other words, most above ground pools, installed, cost 4-12k. Some decks are elaborate and fashionable which can cost just as much as any pool.
Inground vs. Above Ground Pool Size
Were above ground pools have limitations on shape, the square footage can almost always compete with an inground pool, within limitations. An above ground is generally limited to one uniform depth. But the upside is, they work better in urban neighborhoods and often are easier to get past local codes.
Some say the cleaning and maintenance is the same and others say it’s vastly different. Most that say it is different will be taking into consideration drains, varied depths, and other inground specific variables.
The average above ground pool will last 7-15 years before the structure gives out, although their liners will last 5-9 years before they have to be replaced. Although some above ground pools are built better and carry 20-25 year warranties, not all above ground pools are made equal. Caveat emptor, some above ground pools are straight garbage. For an inground structure, the longevity really is contingent on the type of pool. Here is a rough estimate by material fiberglass:20, Vinyl: liners 6-11 years, Concrete: resurfaced every 9-13 years.
